Those eyes that I love,
In all their blackness and glassiness,
To look into and be lost within.
Their flattering surreality.
They’re not like diamonds, don’t even dare!
They’re not like anything; less so real!
They do not glisten, or light up the dark like stars.
They do not dart around with live, or with question
They could not possibly enthral anyone but me.
So, hide them! Keep them away
That I may hold the monopoly;
That they may retain
Just enough of their demure glory to keep me dazzled
At night when we crawl abed together; not touching, no
Just lying together under a blanket of heat,
Becoming familiar with each other’s smell.
